Portugal officially launched its dedicated Digital Nomad Visa (the D8) to separate remote workers from retirees (who use the D7). As we look at 2026, the D8 visa is the clearest pathway to European residency for location-independent professionals.
Here are the hard numbers and requirements you need to know before applying.
1. The Income Threshold
To qualify for the D8 visa in 2026, you must prove a monthly income of at least four times the Portuguese minimum wage.
With the minimum wage set at โฌ820 per month, the mathematical requirement is โฌ3,280 per month.
- This income must come from outside of Portugal.
- You must show at least three months of consistent income history meeting this threshold.
2. Remote Work Documentation
You cannot simply show a bank account with money in it. You must prove that your income is generated through remote employment or freelancing.
- For Employees: An employment contract and a letter from your employer explicitly stating you are authorized to work remotely from Portugal.
- For Freelancers/Contractors: Service contracts, invoices, and a document proving your business entity is registered outside of Portugal.
3. Accommodation
Portugal requires proof that you have a place to live before your visa is approved. You need a 12-month registered lease agreement (Contrato de Arrendamento) or proof of property purchase. Airbnb receipts or hotel bookings are no longer accepted for the D8 residence permit.
4. The Application Process
The D8 is actually a two-step process:
- The Entry Visa (from your home country): You apply at the Portuguese consulate or VFS Global office in your country of residence. This grants you a 120-day entry visa.
- The Residence Permit (in Portugal): Once you arrive in Portugal, you attend an appointment with AIMA (the immigration agency) to convert your entry visa into a 2-year residence permit.
Will you pay taxes?
Yes. Living in Portugal on a D8 visa for more than 183 days makes you a tax resident. Unless you qualify for the very specific Scientific Research and Innovation Regime (NHR 2.0), you will be subject to Portugal's progressive tax rates.
